He was the two children of John Naismith and Margaret two Scottish immigrants. His mother, Margaret Young, the 4th of 11 children, was born in 1833 and entered Lanark County, Canada in 1852. His daddy, John Naismith, was born in 1833, departed Europe when he was 18, and even settled down in Lanark County. On June 20, 1894, Naismith wedded Maude Evelyn Sherman (1870–1937) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The pair had five children: Margaret Mason (Stanley), John, Helen Carolyn (Dodd), Maude Ann (Dawe), and James Sherman. He was an associate of the Pi Gamma Mu and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities.

Naismith was a Presbyterian minister and was again recognized as a Freemason. Maude Naismith passed in 1937, and on June 11, 1939, he wedded his second wife, Florence B. Kincaid. On November 19 of that year, Naismith sorrowed a major brain bleeding and died nine days after in his home in Lawrence. He lived at 78 years old. Naismith passed eight months after the delivery of the NCAA Basketball Championship, which today has grown into one of the largest sports events in North America. Naismith is planted with his first missis in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.

Florence Kincaid passed in 1977 at the period of 98 and is planted with her first spouse, Dr. Frank B. Kincaid, in Kansas, Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit.

Early life

Born and grown on a ranch near Almonte, Ontario, Naismith learned and taught physical education at McGill University in Montreal until 1890 before transferring to Springfield, Massachusetts, the United States after that year, wherein 1891 he created the game of basketball while he was instructing at the International YMCA Training School. 7 years after developing basketball, Naismith obtained his medical degree in Denver in 1898. He then came to the University of Kansas, subsequently evolving into the Kansas Jayhawks’ athletic manager and coach.

While a trainer at Kansas, Naismith coached Phog Allen, who subsequently became the coach at Kansas for 39 seasons, starting a long and prestigious coaching tree. Allen then moved on to coach legends including Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp among others, who themselves coached multiple outstanding players and future coaches. Despite including coaching his last season in 1907, Naismith stays the only coach in Kansas men’s basketball record with a losing record.
